Even as regulators eye stablecoins, the European Central Bank continues exploring a digital euro. ECB board member Piero Cipollone said EU states could reach an agreement on a digital euro “by the end of the year,” targeting a possible 2029 launch.

He called the project a “safe, reliable and universally accessible” form of central bank money that would complement cash and help preserve Europe’s resilience in the digital age.
