Ethereum Whale Garrett Jin Moves $178 Million in ETH to Binance — What We Know
-

Ethereum whale Garrett Jin, identified on-chain as #BitcoinOG1011, deposited approximately $178 million worth of ETH into Binance on May 8, continuing a pattern of large exchange transfers that has the market watching closely. The deposit followed a similar move just two days earlier when Jin sent 165,000 ETH to Binance, bringing the combined total to over 113,000 ETH valued at nearly $260 million across both transfers. Despite the significant outflows, Jin's wallet still holds 303,618 ETH worth roughly $692.5 million alongside 9,343 Bitcoin, meaning the transfers represent a reduction of just over 20% of his ETH stack rather than a full exit. Whether the deposits represent spot selling, hedging activity, or portfolio rebalancing between BTC and ETH cannot be determined from on-chain data alone, as exchange deposits can serve multiple purposes beyond immediate liquidation.
Jin is not an anonymous participant whose moves can be easily dismissed. The former BitForex CEO has built a reputation for large directional bets that have occasionally proven prescient — most notably a $735 million BTC short placed before the October 2025 crash that resulted in significant gains. His wallet has rotated between Bitcoin and Ethereum multiple times in 2026, suggesting active portfolio management rather than passive holding. When a trader with that track record moves this volume to an exchange in a compressed timeframe, the market takes notice regardless of whether the intent is confirmed. ETH was trading near $2,289 at the time of the transfers, and traders are watching Binance order books closely for any sign that the deposited ETH begins converting into visible spot-market selling pressure.
