Is Bitcoin at Risk from Quantum Computing?
-

As PsiQuantum builds its million-qubit quantum computer, the crypto community is debating whether Bitcoin is in danger. Some voices, like Michael Saylor and Charles Hoskinson, argue the threat is overstated, pointing out that attacking Bitcoin would require reusing public keys and hardware far beyond current capabilities—millions of qubits versus today’s roughly 1,000. Cory Klippsten called the fear “lazy FUD,” emphasizing that Bitcoin at rest is largely safe.
Others, however, warn of a shorter timeline. David Carvalho of Naoris Protocol predicts quantum computers could compromise cryptography within 2–3 years, and the Quantum Doomsday Clock points to 2028. PsiQuantum co-founder Terry Rudolph reassured the community that their machines won’t be used to hack private keys. Still, the debate intensifies as quantum computing moves from theory to reality.
