Bitcoin Mining vs. Methane and Forgotten Renewables
-

Bitcoin mining is also funding climate innovation others abandoned. Batten points to the revival of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, a technology shelved since the 1980s due to high costs. With miners providing off-grid revenue, projects like those supported by Makai Ocean Engineering are becoming viable again.
At the same time, Bitcoin mining is reducing emissions by capturing methane from landfills, oil fields, and gas flaring — sources that would otherwise release or burn harmful greenhouse gases. Batten estimates that carbon-negative mining has already mitigated 7% of Bitcoin’s total emissions, positioning mining as a key tool in solving multiple climate challenges at once.
