Changpeng Zhao Says He Is Done Leading Companies — Here's Where Binance's Founder Stands Today
-

Changpeng Zhao, the founder and former CEO of Binance, made a public appearance at the Consensus conference in Miami on Thursday, speaking candidly about his future plans and his complicated relationship with the United States. Zhao acknowledged he had been "trying to avoid the US" since his departure from Binance — a reflection of the legal and reputational weight that followed his November 2023 resignation and subsequent guilty plea to a felony charge related to failure to maintain an adequate anti-money laundering regime at Binance. He was pardoned by President Trump in October 2025, allowing him to re-engage more publicly with the crypto industry. At Consensus, Zhao floated the idea of revitalizing Binance.US to give American users access to global liquidity — a notable suggestion given the domestic exchange's struggles — but stopped well short of committing to any operational role.
On the question of whether he would lead another company, Zhao was unusually direct in closing the door. "I don't think I've got the stamina to run another startup, to lead another company," he said. "I'm a one-trick pony. I'm okay with that level. I'm done." The remarks came on the same day The Information published its report about Treasury's compliance demands on Binance — a juxtaposition that underscored just how much unfinished business surrounds his legacy at the exchange he built into a global giant. Zhao's appearance at Consensus drew significant attention precisely because of that context: a founder who pleaded guilty to federal charges, received a presidential pardon, and now watches from the sidelines as the company he created faces renewed scrutiny over sanctions compliance and its financial ties to the sitting US president's business interests. Whatever role Zhao plays going forward, Binance's regulatory fate appears set to unfold largely without him.
