FLI Cashes Out $500M From Buterin’s SHIB Donation
-

In 2021, Buterin allocated portions of the Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens he received from the crypto community to charitable causes, including the Future of Life Institute. At the time, he expected the donation’s value to reach only $10–25 million, given market depth limitations. Instead, FLI managed to cash out roughly $500 million, far exceeding his expectations.
The donation helped fund a $25 million multi-year grants program announced by FLI in June 2021. While the funds supported the organization’s work on existential risks, Buterin’s recent statements reveal growing discomfort with its current approach, particularly its emphasis on political advocacy and large-scale interventions. The controversy underscores the challenges of aligning philanthropic contributions with evolving organizational strategies.
