Vitalik Buterin Distances Himself From Future of Life Institute

Vitalik Buterin announced Friday that he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute, the group he donated Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens to in 2021. Buterin explained that the institute initially presented a broad roadmap to reduce existential risks, covering artificial intelligence, biology, and nuclear threats, which motivated his donation. Over time, however, he says the organization shifted focus toward cultural and political advocacy on AI risks—an approach he views as materially different from the original strategy.

“My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools can easily lead to unintended outcomes and authoritarian solutions, even if not originally intended,” Buterin wrote. While some FLI proposals aim to safeguard AI and biosynthesis systems, he argues such measures are fragile and can be bypassed, raising concerns about effectiveness. Despite this, he acknowledges the group’s mission to ensure transformative technologies benefit humanity.
