Vitalik Buterin Says DAOs Need to Be More Than Token Voting

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for a rethink of decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) design, arguing that many DAOs have stalled at a shallow model of token-weighted treasury control. In a recent post, he said this structure is inefficient, vulnerable to capture and fails to improve on traditional corporate or political systems.

Instead, Buterin argued that DAOs should focus on solving concrete infrastructure problems, such as building better oracles, enabling onchain dispute resolution and supporting long-term stewardship of projects after founding teams move on. In his view, governance design should be treated as a core product, not an afterthought.
