Japan Launches “DOGE” Government Efficiency Drive

Japan has kicked off a major reform push with a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative aimed at overhauling special tax measures and subsidies.
A newly established 30-person office will audit long-standing tax incentives, many of which lack clear data on impact.
Finance Minister Katayama says Japan urgently needs objective metrics, especially as the government faces a 1.5 trillion-yen revenue shortfall if provisional taxes are abolished.
Public feedback on subsidy reforms will be collected before year-end.
