UK Court Delivers Mixed Ruling in Getty Images vs. Stability AI Case
-

The UK High Court of Justice has issued a split decision in Getty Images v. Stability AI, a landmark case over AI training and copyright.
Justice Joanna Smith ruled that Stability’s Stable Diffusion model infringed Getty’s watermark trademark in some cases but dismissed most of Getty’s broader copyright claims.
The court found that Stable Diffusion doesn’t store or reproduce copyrighted works, meaning it doesn’t qualify as an “infringing copy” under UK law. The outcome leaves major questions about AI and copyright still unresolved.
