Perplexity has reportedly sent Alphabet an official offer to buy the Chrome browser for $34.5 billion, contingent on the outcome of the ongoing U.S. antitrust case against Google, Bloomberg reports.Key details:
According to Perplexity’s Chief Commercial Officer Dmitry Shevelenko, several large investment funds have agreed to fully finance the deal. The company pledged not to introduce any “hidden changes” to the browser. If the acquisition is approved, Perplexity plans to invest $3 billion into Chrome and Chromium over the next two years and offer jobs to a significant portion of Google’s talented Chrome team. Google would not receive any equity stake in Perplexity to avoid antitrust risks.
Background:
In July 2025, Perplexity raised $100 million at an $18 billion valuation. In August 2024, a U.S. court ruled that Google abused its dominance in the search engine market. In April 2025, hearings began where the U.S. Department of Justice requested that Google be forced to sell Chrome and terminate agreements making Google the default search engine on partner devices. Other potential buyers mentioned in case of a Chrome sale include OpenAI and Yahoo.
