Roman Storm was found guilty in August on one of three federal charges tied to Tornado Cash.

✅ Guilty: Conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter

❌ Deadlocked: Money laundering + sanctions violations

The jury’s split decision has left legal experts divided. Some fear it could embolden prosecutors, while others believe the DOJ may back off.

Jake Chervinsky, Chief Legal Officer at Variant Fund, warned:

“If the Trump administration wants the USA to be the crypto capital of the world, then the DOJ must not be allowed to retry the two deadlocked charges.”

The ruling has sparked debate about whether open-source developers can be held liable for how decentralized code is used.
