South Korea may decide by Nov 11 whether to let Google & Apple export 1:5,000 high-res map data abroad.

    Concerns:

Risk of exposing military sites (SK is still technically at war with NK)

Google previously rejected conditions to open local data centers + blur security sites

Local rivals Naver Map, T Map, Kakao Map already use 1:5,000 detail, giving them a competitive edge.

Google is now reportedly agreeing to blur sensitive locations and buy data from approved Korean providers.

A fascinating battle over data sovereignty — mapping tech just became political.

South Korea’s stance on Google Maps shows how vital control over geospatial data has become.
