SpaceX Launches Volunteer Fire Department at Starbase
-

SpaceX has quietly formed the Starbase Volunteer Fire Department, tightening its control over emergency response at its Texas launch site.
A state filing shows the nonprofit, led by SpaceX employees, will handle fire prevention, suppression, and public safety education. The city of Starbase — recently incorporated and largely run by SpaceX staff — plans a 3-year contract with the department.
SpaceX has historically relied on its own safety teams plus local fire crews. The move suggests a shift toward self-contained emergency services, even as explosive test fires and rocket malfunctions remain common at Starbase.
Starbase’s 2026 budget allocates just $60,000 to the fire department — far less than its $1.3 million law enforcement contract with Cameron County.
