Alongside its opposition to the domestic encryption bill, the Global Encryption Coalition is calling on Ireland to pull back from the EU’s Chat Control proposal, which would allow authorities to scan messages before encryption. Germany recently opposed the measure, raising doubts about its future. Ireland, set to hold the EU Council presidency in 2026, could play a key role in shaping the law, according to privacy advocates.

Ireland backing out would be a huge win for privacy advocates. Chat control laws open too many doors for abuse.

Public pressure works. Hopefully, more countries realize how dangerous blanket surveillance can be for digital rights.
