A Circana Q3 2025 report shows that 63% of U.S. gamers purchase no more than two games per year, with 33% not buying any titles at all. Only 4% of players buy more than one game per month, while 10% purchase one monthly.

The data highlights a growing reliance on a small segment of hyper-enthusiast, price-insensitive players to sustain premium game sales. Many gamers now favor long-running live-service titles or subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Netflix Games over buying new releases.

The U.S. gaming market really depends on loyal core players. Without them, new titles wouldn’t sustain for long.

It’s interesting how core gamers keep the entire ecosystem alive while casuals come and go.
