A recent survey by Bectu highlights a crisis among UK creative industry freelancers, with 39% currently out of work and only 13% feeling secure in their jobs. The sector, largely dependent on freelance labor, is plagued by precarious employment, long hours, bullying, harassment, and limited rights. Less than a quarter of freelancers have worked consistently over the past six months, and the majority report standard workdays exceeding 10 hours. The survey warns that without intervention, the sustainability of the UK’s £125bn-a-year creative industries is at risk.

Creative work often gets undervalued, even though it fuels most of today’s media. Better contracts and long-term collaborations could reduce insecurity.

So true. The creative industry thrives on freelancers, yet they’re treated as disposable. There needs to be structural support, not just gig-based appreciation.
