Making a living as a freelance journalist remains tough. At AHCJ’s September Lunch & Learn, members said most can’t rely solely on independent media work. Rates of about $1 per word are considered “good” but rare, and multiple edits further reduce hourly pay. Many freelancers supplement their income with branded content or niche writing gigs that pay more per word.

Freelance journalism deserves more recognition. Quality reporting shouldn’t come with financial struggle.
