OpenAI Tweaks Sora Video App After Copyright Backlash

OpenAI’s new invite-only video app Sora rocketed to the top of the App Store this week, thanks to its “cameos” feature that lets users upload biometric data and appear in AI-generated videos.

But Sora’s early policy — requiring Hollywood studios and agencies to “opt out” to protect their IP — triggered criticism. Users have already posted videos of studio-owned characters like Pikachu and SpongeBob interacting with deepfakes of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

In a blog post Friday, Altman announced changes: Sora will shift to an opt-in model for copyrighted characters, giving rights holders “more granular control” over how their IP is used. Some studios see Sora’s “interactive fan fiction” as a new way to engage audiences, but many want clear limits or total exclusion for their characters.
