From Israel-linked hackers targeting Iran’s crypto exchanges to North Korean groups executing complex supply chain attacks, cryptocurrency theft has become as much about geopolitics as it is about money.

Groups like Gonjeshke Darande (“Predatory Sparrow”) have attacked Iranian infrastructure and exposed the source code of major exchanges, while North Korean unit UNC4899 has executed advanced cloud exploits to siphon millions in digital assets.

Experts say 2025 marks a turning point: crypto hacking has evolved into a form of cyberwarfare, and exchanges must adopt government-level security measures to survive. Without coordinated intelligence sharing and stronger defenses, losses will likely continue to escalate.

Cyber warfare has officially entered the blockchain era — nations are using crypto heists not only to fund operations but also to test each other’s digital defenses in a new form of economic proxy conflict.

When crypto theft turns geopolitical, it blurs the line between financial crime and statecraft, revealing how digital assets have become tools of influence, retaliation, and survival in global power struggles.
