The U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday that it has canceled 321 awards worth $7.56 billion, mostly tied to clean energy initiatives. The agency has not released a full list of the affected projects, but reporting from E&E News and Heatmap indicates that many were located in states that voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the last election.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said his state lost $1.2 billion earmarked for its hydrogen hub, while projects in Texas and Louisiana were also cut. At least 10 direct air capture projects totaling $47.3 million were canceled, though some in Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana, and North Dakota survived.

The oil and gas industry has supported direct air capture because the CO₂ can be injected into underperforming oil wells to boost production. Other affected states include Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Washington.

Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, confirmed the cuts in a tweet, calling them evidence that “the Left’s climate agenda is being cancelled.”

The DOE just canceled 321 clean energy awards worth $7.56B. Early reports suggest many projects were in Harris-voting states — raising both political and economic questions about the cuts.

$7.56B in clean energy projects gone: DOE scraps 321 awards, with reports showing heavy impact in states that backed VP Harris. Expect heated debate over politics vs policy.
