🚨 TikTok Hardware Wallet Scam: A $6.9M Crypto Heist with No Warning Signs
-
A shocking new crypto scam has emerged in 2025 — and this time, it’s not your typical phishing email or fake website. This one hits right at the heart of your cold storage.
The Setup:
A crypto user in China bought what appeared to be a "sealed, brand-new" hardware wallet advertised on TikTok’s Chinese version (Douyin). Everything looked legit — until every single coin stored in that wallet was drained within minutes.
Total loss? $6.9 million.
What Happened?
The victim reached out in a panic to cybersecurity firm SlowMist, revealing one of the year’s worst hardware wallet compromises. According to SlowMist's CISO "23pds," the wallet had been tampered with at the hardware level before it was ever sold.
This wasn’t a simple hack. It was surgical, silent, and devastating.
️ Why This Scam Is So Dangerous:
No red flags — the wallet looked new and sealed. No phishing links or suspicious emails. No chance to recover funds once the wallet was used.
This is next-level fraud, where criminals pre-program wallets or recovery sheets with backdoors, then resell them as "new." Once the user deposits crypto — it’s game over.
How to Stay Safe:
Buy hardware wallets ONLY from official websites or trusted resellers. Never trust “sealed” packaging from unknown online sellers, especially social media ads. Always generate your own recovery phrase — never trust a pre-printed one.
Bottom line: If your wallet came with a “ready-made” seed phrase or you bought it from a social media ad… you could be next. Stay cautious, verify everything, and don’t let your secure wallet become someone else’s payday.
