$500B AI Megaproject “Stargate” From OpenAI & SoftBank… Still Hasn’t Built a Single Data Center
-
So, remember that massive, headline-grabbing plan announced back in January 2025 — the one where OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle were supposed to drop up to $500 billion into U.S.-based hyperscale data centers?
Yeah... six months later, nothing’s been built.
That’s according to The Wall Street Journal, which reports the Stargate project is basically stuck in limbo — bogged down by disagreements and unclear direction.
🧱 What Was Promised?Announced by President Donald Trump at a high-profile press event featuring: OpenAI’s Sam Altman SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son Oracle’s Larry Ellison Goal: Build ten AI-focused data centers, starting in Texas Train next-gen AI models in American-built, hyperscale facilities Trump even promised executive orders if needed to speed it up
Fast-forward to today:
The new target is reportedly just one small data center in Ohio by end of 2025 😬
What’s the Holdup?
According to WSJ sources:
OpenAI and SoftBank can’t even agree on where to build They’re butting heads over key partnership terms OpenAI is now moving forward with Oracle independently — committing to pay $30B/year for three years for new centers without SoftBank involved
Oracle claims this is still part of “Stargate,” but… that sounds more like rebranding the split than real unity.
Meanwhile, both companies continue saying everything is going "great" and "hyperscale." But insiders are saying otherwise.
TL;DR:
$500B AI data center dream is hitting serious roadblocks OpenAI + SoftBank can’t align on location or structure Oracle deal moves ahead — but seemingly without SoftBank Goal quietly shrunk from 10 megacenters to 1 small facility in Ohio PR says “all good” — sources say “not even close”
So... What Happened?
Did the hype outrun reality? Is this just the normal pace of megaprojects? Or are we watching a billion-dollar partnership quietly fall apart in slow motion?
Anyone here tracking Stargate or the OpenAI–Oracle deal? Curious how this will affect AI compute availability in the next few years.
