Petro specifically noted that Bitcoin mined with renewable energy addresses his concern that fossil fuel-powered mining contributes to climate change, framing the initiative as environmentally compatible rather than in tension with his administration's climate positions. Bitcoin mining analysts have noted that US commercial miners are increasingly redirecting capacity toward AI and high-performance computing in pursuit of higher-margin opportunities, creating an opening for countries with low electricity costs to capture a larger share of global hashrate. Colombia's renewable surplus and low electricity cost profile position it well for exactly this kind of opportunity.
