Kelp's rsETH Has a $174 Million Backing Shortfall and Here Is the Recovery Plan

The full scale of the rsETH backing deficit created by the Kelp DAO exploit is now clearer, and the recovery effort being assembled to address it is substantial but still faces a significant gap. At the time of writing, only 40,373 rsETH sit in the adapter contract against confirmed backing for 152,577 rsETH, creating a shortfall of approximately 76,127 rsETH currently worth about $174.5 million. The 30,765 ETH being sought through the Arbitrum governance vote represents roughly $71 million toward that shortfall, covering approximately 40% of the deficit if released and directed to the recovery address.

The broader DeFi United recovery effort assembled over the past week adds further capital to close the remaining gap. Protocols including Mantle, EtherFi Foundation, Golem Foundation, Lido DAO, Ethena, LayerZero, Ink Foundation, and Tyrdo have collectively pledged approximately 43,000 ETH worth around $101 million to the coordinated recovery effort. Combined with the Arbitrum frozen funds if released, the total committed recovery capital approaches $172 million against a $174.5 million shortfall, bringing a near-complete restoration of rsETH backing within reach if all pledged capital is delivered and the governance vote passes. The remaining gap would require additional contributions or a recovery in ETH price to close fully, but the trajectory of the coordinated response represents one of the most substantial collective DeFi recovery efforts yet attempted following a major exploit.
