The early usage patterns in India are notably different from what might be expected from a productivity-focused AI tool. Rather than primarily functional outputs, Indian users are creating studio-style portraits from everyday photos, fantasy newspaper covers, tarot-style visuals, fashion moodboards, cinematic portrait collages, and imaginative images that place themselves at the center of the visual. OpenAI describes the trend as AI image generation being used as a form of self-expression, with users treating the tool more like a creative identity platform than a utility.The broader global response has been more measured.
ChatGPT app downloads rose 11% week-over-week following the launch according to Sensor Tower, but daily active users and sessions increased only around 1%, and Similarweb data shows global web traffic rising approximately 1.6% week-over-week. The more dramatic spikes appeared in emerging markets: Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia each saw download increases of up to 79% week-over-week during the rollout period, suggesting stronger new-user demand in markets where AI image tools are still in their early adoption phase. India's pattern of high absolute volume with modest week-over-week growth reflects an already large and engaged user base expanding further, while the Pakistan and Indonesia spikes reflect new audiences discovering the product for the first time.
