Amazon Launches Conversational AI Shopping Feature That Answers Product Questions in Real Time
-

Amazon has launched a new AI-powered feature called "Join the chat" that allows shoppers to ask questions about products and receive conversational audio responses generated in real time. The feature is part of a broader experience called "Hear the highlights," which provides short audio summaries on millions of product pages within the Amazon Shopping app. To use it, customers open a product page, tap the "Hear the highlights" button located below the product image, and can then either listen to an overview or tap the "Join the chat" icon to ask specific questions via text or voice. The audio continues playing even as users browse other parts of the app.
The feature is designed to replicate the experience of speaking with a knowledgeable store employee rather than scrolling through lengthy product descriptions and review pages. Shoppers can ask specific questions like whether a coffee maker is suited for beginners or whether a sweater feels itchy based on customer feedback, with the AI pulling together product features and review insights to build contextual answers. Amazon says the AI builds on previous responses within a conversation rather than repeating information, allowing users to steer the discussion in directions relevant to their specific needs. The "Join the chat" feature joins Amazon's growing suite of AI shopping tools including Rufus, its generative AI product research assistant, Interests for personalized product tracking, and "Help me decide" for purchase recommendations based on browsing history.
