Truecaller's Growth Is Slowing — Here's What's Behind the Decline
-

Truecaller, the caller identification platform with over 500 million users worldwide, is entering a more difficult phase as growth slows in India — its largest market — and competition closes in from multiple directions. Downloads from India fell 16% year-over-year in 2025, while global downloads declined 5%, reversing several years of consistent growth. The company's shares have fallen approximately 78% since its 2021 IPO and are down around 37% so far this year, reflecting investor concern about its long-term trajectory. Downloads peaked at 175 million in 2021 and have since stabilized around 120 million annually, suggesting the era of rapid user acquisition is over. The competitive pressure is coming from several fronts simultaneously. Telecom operators in India are rolling out Calling Name Presentation, a network-level caller ID system that overlaps with part of Truecaller's core offering. Apple and Google are both building caller identification and spam-blocking features directly into their operating systems, reducing the need for third-party apps. And the company's most immediate financial challenge is not competition on features — it is advertising. Around 65% to 70% of Truecaller's revenue now comes from ads, and in August 2025 the company lost roughly one-third of its ad traffic from its largest partner, identified by analysts as Google, due to what management described as an unresolved algorithm issue. That partner still accounts for more than a third of total revenue.
