Bhutan Says “Namaste” to Crypto – Now You Can Pay for Yak Rides with BTC
-
Yo fellow degens,Bhutan — yes, the land of monks, mountains, and measuring Gross National Happiness — just plugged into the crypto grid.
Thanks to a new partnership between Binance Pay and DK Bank, tourists can now pay with crypto across Bhutan. Nearly 1,000 local merchants are onboarded, including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, shops, and even some transportation services. That means your lunch, your souvenir prayer flags, and maybe even that yak ride might be payable in USDT.
The idea? Attract modern, tech-savvy travelers (aka us), ditch the outdated bank wire system, and make tourism more accessible and slick.
They’re also building this big project called Gelephu Mindfulness City, and crypto is baked right into the plan. Bhutan’s embracing Web3 not just for the vibes, but for real economic growth.
Fair heads-up: some local guides say adoption is still ramping up, so best to bring a mix of crypto + cash + card for now. But still — it’s a big leap for a tiny kingdom.
Zen + Chain = Bhutan 2.0.
