Fortnite Save the World Goes Free-to-Play After 9 Years
-

After years of waiting, Fortnite Save the World is finally free-to-play. Epic Games confirmed that as of April 16, 2026, players can access the co-op survival mode at no cost across all platforms. Originally launched in early access back in 2017, Save the World was once intended to be the main experience before Fortnite Battle Royale took over globally.
The free-to-play shift comes alongside a major update, including a revamped Homebase that evolves as players progress. Early supporters aren’t left out either, as those who previously purchased the game receive bonuses like Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold. Meanwhile, new players can jump in and explore the PvE mode for the first time, with added incentives like Twitch Drops and a crossover event that ties into Battle Royale.
To celebrate the transition, Epic is running a limited-time event through June 5, where players can unlock exclusive rewards like the Jess Outfit by earning XP in Save the World. While the move marks a new beginning for the mode, it also reflects a full-circle moment for a game that spent nearly a decade evolving behind the scenes.
