Cognition just snapped up Windsurf – the AI code editor formerly known as Codeium!
-
Big moves in AI dev land!
Cognition, the brains behind the AI software engineer Devin, just announced they’ve officially acquired Windsurf — yep, that AI-powered code editor that’s been making waves (pun intended
).
While the $$$ details are hush-hush 🤫, here’s what’s known:
🧠 The deal includes Windsurf’s IP, product, user base, business ops, and brand, and yep — the team is coming along too!
Windsurf currently has 350+ enterprise customers and hundreds of thousands of daily users. That’s some serious traction.
🧑It supports over 70 programming languages and plays nice with your favorite IDEs like VS Code, Visual Studio, and JetBrains.
Now here’s the plot twist:
Back in May, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was in talks to buy Windsurf for a casual $3B — but that deal fell through. Instead, Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and some R&D folks jumped ship to Google DeepMind.
Google still threw down $2.4B for a non-exclusive license to Windsurf’s tech. So yeah… even when a deal dies, big money still changes hands.
Windsurf (aka the artist formerly known as Codeium) was founded in 2021 and raised over $200M to date. It was reportedly being valued at around $2.85B earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Cognition is absolutely crushing it — they raised "hundreds of millions" in Spring 2025 at a $4B valuation.
TL;DR:
Cognition just supercharged its dev AI arsenal by scooping up Windsurf. Devin's about to get even more powerful... and maybe a bit windier.️
Anyone else feeling like we're watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe of AI tools play out in real time?
