Opera Proposes Shift to CELO Tokens in Deeper Push Into Blockchain Ecosystem
-

Like many blockchain-native tokens, CELO has struggled to return to its previous highs. Source: CoinMarketCapOpera is seeking to restructure its agreement with the Celo ecosystem by replacing cash payments with native tokens. The company has proposed receiving 160 million CELO instead of US dollar-based compensation, pending approval from Celo’s onchain governance community.
If approved, the move would align Opera’s financial incentives more closely with Celo’s long-term growth and position it as one of the largest institutional holders of the token. The companies have collaborated since 2021, with Opera integrating Celo-based stablecoins into its browser and expanding its MiniPay wallet, which now has 14 million users focused on payments in emerging markets.
