Bitcoin May Need Quantum-Proof Security as Technology Advances
-

Experts believe Bitcoin will eventually need to adopt quantum-resistant cryptography as quantum computing continues to develop. Researchers argue that integrating post-quantum cryptography—such as lattice-based and hash-based signature systems—could protect the network from potential future attacks once quantum machines become powerful enough.
However, implementing these upgrades could be complicated due to Bitcoin’s decentralized governance model. Any major change would require widespread agreement across the network through a soft fork. While proposals like BIP-360 aim to reduce long-term exposure to quantum risks, researchers say true protection will ultimately require fully quantum-safe digital signatures.
