EU Digital Laws Target the Power of Centralized Tech Systems
-

The European Union has introduced several regulations designed to address the risks posed by dominant digital platforms. Laws such as the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act aim to limit the power of large tech “gatekeepers” and reduce systemic risks created by their platforms. Other measures like the Data Act focus on improving data portability to reduce user lock-in.
Additional regulations including the Digital Operational Resilience Act and the NIS2 Directive treat concentrated digital infrastructure as a critical vulnerability. Together, these policies reflect a growing consensus among regulators that centralization concentrates power and can turn local failures into widespread disruptions, affecting entire sectors or even national economies.
