Microsoft Eyes AI & Cloud Assistance to Keep Gamers Engaged
-

The new Microsoft patent, titled “State management for video game help sessions,” envisions a world where players no longer abandon a game due to tough bosses or puzzles. By capturing a snapshot of a player’s progress and spinning up a cloud instance, a helper—human or AI—can step in and complete the section, chatting with the player and giving tips in real-time.
Importantly, the system ensures player agency and learning: once the task is completed, users can accept the progress or revert and try on their own. While Sony’s Ghost Players show AI paths for players to follow, Microsoft’s approach allows direct gameplay intervention, signaling a potential shift in how games handle difficulty, accessibility, and engagement, all while keeping the player in control.
