Leadership Shake-Up Hits Alibaba’s Qwen AI Team
-

Alibaba’s Qwen AI project has lost one of its most prominent technical leaders just one day after unveiling its new Qwen 3.5 open-weight small models. Junyang Lin, a central figure in the development of the Qwen family, announced on X that he was “stepping down” from the project, without providing further details. His departure comes at a pivotal moment as Alibaba pushes to strengthen its position in the global AI race.
The Qwen models, first introduced in April 2023 and later opened to the public after regulatory approval, have become one of China’s leading open-weight AI initiatives. With competition intensifying against systems developed by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, Lin’s abrupt exit raises questions about continuity and leadership during a critical growth phase for the project.
