Claude Downloads Spike as Anthropic Rejects Defense Partnership
-

Anthropic experienced a major boost after confirming it would not partner with the U.S. defense department, citing concerns over surveillance risks and the potential use of AI in fully autonomous weapons. Following the announcement, U.S. downloads of Claude rose 37% day-over-day on Friday and 51% on Saturday, according to Sensor Tower.
Additional data from Appfigures showed even stronger momentum, estimating an 88% jump in U.S. downloads on Saturday — the first time Claude surpassed ChatGPT in daily U.S. installs. The app climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store and also became the top free iPhone app in countries including Canada, Germany, and Switzerland, highlighting how ethical positioning in AI is increasingly influencing consumer choice.
