Legal Battle Intensifies as Musk Defends AI Safety Motives
-

Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI centers on the organization’s transition from a nonprofit research lab to a for-profit entity — a move Musk claims violated its founding principles. He argues that commercial pressures tied to scale and revenue could put AI safety at risk. In his deposition, Musk maintained he signed the AI safety letter simply because “it seemed like a good idea,” denying suggestions it was motivated by competitive interests after launching xAI.
However, scrutiny isn’t limited to OpenAI. Musk’s social platform X recently faced backlash after explicit AI-generated images created by Grok circulated widely, prompting investigations by regulators including California authorities and the EU. In the deposition, Musk also addressed artificial general intelligence (AGI), acknowledging it carries risks, and corrected earlier claims about his financial contributions to OpenAI, clarifying the amount was closer to $44.8 million rather than $100 million.
