“Is This the End?” Creatives Speak Out on an Industry in Crisis
-

A recent post on Creative Boom struck a nerve across the design community. After losing their job and going freelance out of necessity, one designer asked a devastating question: “Is this the end of my creative career?” The responses — more than 40 from experienced illustrators and designers — painted a sobering picture. Many said this isn’t just another slow season. It feels structural.
Freelancers reported droughts lasting 12 to 18 months, shrinking budgets, and studios expecting “unicorn” hires who can fill multiple specialist roles at once. Some blamed global economic pressure on marketing spend; others pointed to AI disruption reshaping client expectations. What stood out most wasn’t panic — it was exhaustion. These weren’t newcomers. They were established creatives saying, in unison, that something fundamental has shifted.
