Xbox Delay Reportedly Forces Call of Duty to Rethink Its 2026 Launch Plans
-

A rumored delay to Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console may be reshaping the future of Call of Duty, according to social media leaker The Ghost of Hope.
The report claims Activision had originally planned to launch the next mainline entry — reportedly Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — alongside Microsoft’s new console in 2026. The coordinated release was allegedly meant to compete for attention with Grand Theft Auto 6.
However, with the next-gen Xbox now expected to slip beyond 2026 due to ongoing RAM and SSD shortages, those marketing plans may no longer be viable.
The shake-up comes during a major leadership transition at Microsoft. Longtime executive Phil Spencer retired after 37 years, while former Xbox president Sarah Bond also departed. Spencer’s successor, Asha Sharma, previously led Microsoft’s CoreAI division and has publicly emphasized that generative AI will not replace human creativity in game development.
With hardware timelines shifting, Microsoft is reportedly encouraging Activision to be “more agile” — potentially moving away from rigid annual Call of Duty launches.
If true, that flexibility could significantly alter how one of gaming’s biggest franchises approaches releases in 2026 and beyond.
