AI Is Disrupting the Competitive Advantage of Skilled Freelancers
-

For years, conventional wisdom suggested that automation would mostly threaten lower-skilled roles. But this new research challenges that assumption.
“We're seeing a dramatic shift in the freelance labor market,” Hui explained. “Generative AI isn't just affecting the lowest-skilled workers—it's disrupting the competitive advantage of even the best workers.”
Freelancers who built reputations on speed, expertise, and quality are now competing against algorithms that can generate content, code, designs, and analysis in seconds — often at a fraction of the cost.
Co-author Oren Reshef, also from Washington University, emphasized that AI tools are fundamentally changing labor dynamics: skilled freelancers who once relied on reputation and experience are now facing automated systems that deliver faster and cheaper outputs.
The result? A compressed market where even elite workers are losing contracts and income.
