The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling gaming console in the United States in January 2026, according to the latest report from Circana. Despite being five years old, Sony’s flagship console outperformed the newer Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025.
Circana’s Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor, Mat Piscatella, reported that overall gaming hardware sales rose 16% year-over-year, climbing from $213 million in January 2025 to $248 million in January 2026. The PS5 led both in units sold and dollar revenue, even though its own sales were down 17% compared to last year.
Meanwhile, Xbox Series hardware sales declined 27% year-over-year, and the original Nintendo Switch saw a sharp 79% drop. On the software side, total spending on games—including physical, digital, DLC, microtransactions, and subscriptions—rose 3% to nearly $4.7 billion. Subscription spending alone jumped 23%, highlighting continued growth in service-based gaming models.
