Thinking about replacing your remote freelancers with AI to save costs? A new study from the Center for AI Safety and Scale AI suggests you might want to think twice.

Researchers tested six leading AI agents on real-world freelance tasks across industries like game development and data analysis. The results were underwhelming: no AI completed more than 3% of the work. In dollar terms, that’s $1,810 of $143,991 possible revenue.

Top performer? Manus at 2.5%. OpenAI’s GPT-5 managed only 1.7%, while Google Gemini 2.5 Pro came last at 0.8%. Even ChatGPT Agent barely hit 1.3%. The takeaway: AI is far from ready to replace skilled freelancers.
