Spotify’s Best Developers Haven’t Written Code Since December

Has AI coding reached a tipping point?
During its latest earnings call, Spotify revealed that its top developers “have not written a single line of code since December,” according to co-CEO Gustav Söderström.
Instead, engineers are using an internal AI system called Honk, powered by generative AI including Claude Code, to fix bugs, add features, and deploy updates — even from their phones during their morning commute.
Spotify says this workflow has “tremendously” accelerated product velocity. In 2025 alone, the company shipped over 50 new features, including AI-powered Prompted Playlists and new audiobook discovery tools.
If this model scales, AI may not just assist developers — it may fundamentally redefine how software gets built.
