The Legal and Strategic Bet Behind Musk’s Moon Vision
-

Behind the moon factory concept is a broader theory: Musk may be building the world’s most powerful “world model” AI by combining proprietary real-world data from across his companies. Tesla contributes energy and road data. Neuralink offers neural signals. SpaceX provides orbital mechanics. Add lunar-based computing infrastructure and resource extraction, and the ecosystem becomes uniquely difficult to replicate.
Legally, Musk’s ambitions rest on a controversial interpretation of space law. While the 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits national ownership of the moon, a 2015 U.S. law allows companies to own resources they extract. Critics argue this distinction is blurry — extracting lunar materials may effectively amount to owning pieces of the moon itself. Whether technically feasible or geopolitically sustainable, Musk’s moon strategy is less science fiction than a high-stakes bet on infrastructure, law, and AI supremacy converging in orbit.

proprietary tesla + neuralink + spacex data feeding a moon ai…sounds like my brain trying to process this
