The Hidden Cost of AI in the Workplace
-

AI promises to make employees more efficient, but new research suggests a hidden cost: burnout. In a tech company studied over eight months, workers embraced AI and started accomplishing more—but that freedom came at a price. With no external pressure to increase output, employees naturally extended their workload into evenings and lunch breaks. AI helped them do more, but work never shrank, it only grew.
These findings highlight a key challenge of workplace AI adoption: augmentation doesn’t automatically translate into shorter days or reduced stress. Organizational expectations often rise alongside capabilities, meaning employees may feel the pressure to constantly prove that the AI tools are worth the investment. For businesses, this raises an important question: how can AI be used to truly reduce workload, rather than simply expand it?
