Base App Chooses Trading Over Social

Coinbase is narrowing the focus of its Base App — and making a clear bet.

The company is sunsetting Creator Rewards and its Farcaster-powered social feed to concentrate entirely on tradable assets. Over seven months, the Creator Rewards program paid out about $450K to 17,000 creators, averaging roughly $26 per creator.

According to Base creator Jesse Pollak, the takeaway was simple: the app was trying to do too much.

“The app needs to have one primary focus,” he said. “And that thing is trading.”

In the race to build an “Everything App,” Base is choosing depth over breadth.
