-

OpenAI analyzed over 1.5 million conversations to produce its first detailed public report on ChatGPT usage, according to The Washington Post. The study covered 130,000 users between May 2024 and June 2025, with nearly half of adults aged 18–25.
Key findings:
73% of requests are non-work-related (up from ~50% in June 2024)
Seven main request categories:
Practical advice (most popular)
Writing or editing text
Information search
Relationships & personal life (only 1.9%)
Roleplay scenarios (0.4%), including “AI girlfriend” interactions
Weekly users exceeded 700 million
Gender shift: In early 2023, ~80% of active users had “typically male” names; by June 2025, 52% had “typically female” names
OpenAI noted that all analyses were automated, with no researchers reading individual conversations.
