Instagram may let users exit Close Friends lists
-

Instagram is developing a feature that would allow users to remove themselves from someone else’s Close Friends list, Meta confirmed to TechCrunch. The feature is still in early development and is not being publicly tested.
Close Friends, launched in 2018, lets users share Stories, Reels, and posts with a limited audience instead of all followers. Until now, users had no way to opt out if someone added them to their list.
The prototype was discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. Screenshots show Instagram warning users that leaving a Close Friends list means they’ll no longer see that person’s private content unless re-added.
If released, the feature could give users more control over their social boundaries—though it may also introduce some awkward social moments.
