Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says tokenized stocks could help prevent trading halts like the 2021 GameStop freeze that locked out retail investors. In a post on X, Tenev called the episode “one of the strangest and most visible equity market failures in recent history.”

He blamed the freeze on outdated market infrastructure and the multi-day stock settlement process, which forced brokers to post large amounts of capital during periods of extreme volatility. Tenev argued that real-time settlement through tokenization could reduce risk and ease pressure on brokerages and clearinghouses.
